Styling that pesky space above your kitchen cabinets can be difficult. It's a question I get asked all the time by clients: "What do I put up there?"
The answer is really pretty simple, and I promise there are many options besides fake greenery which seems to be the most popular option here in the heart of the midwest in Dayton, Ohio. (it's a blessing and a curse!)
My first recommendation is to not go out and just buy things that take up space. Good design is not about filling your home with "stuff" - but with things that actually mean something to you!
#1 Display a collection of objects. In these cases the cabinetry doubles as storage space for items not used that often. I love the variety of shapes but notice how they kept the color scheme simple to keep it from looking too cluttered. Stick to one or two colors. The pieces were probably collected over time and each piece had careful consideration before it was purchased. A collection like these are most likely filled with meaning and memories!
#2 Create a focal point. In the next two photos the homeowners created an actual display out of objects to create a focal point for the space. The white plates really jump off the wall and add visual interest while maintaining balance in the space. The bowls in the second picture add a bit of color. Both of the displays are very intentional and perfectly spaced out unlike the "collected" look from above.
I love that these are pictures of adventures she and her husband have shared. A great way to add memories and meaning to the space!
#3 Repeat the same type of object. This idea is a mesh of the above two where you choose all the same objects in a variety of sizes, color, and style such as:
Baskets
Pottery - deep and earthy or bright and cheery like below :)
Bottles - get unique bottles or those of similar color. You don't want it to look like a college collection of empty booze bottles!
#4 Create extra storage. This idea is also great for those of you who hate any type of clutter (and dusting!)
#5 Eclectic. Anything Goes! Just pay attention to the design principles (emphasis, scale, rhythm, balance) to get a pulled-together look instead of a jumbled mess!
#6 Get Creative! I love these ideas for an unconventional kitchen.
This wallpaper idea is awesome! A great way to add some color!

Hi Laura, Thank you for including my photo (the first one) in your post. You might enjoy seeing how that space above my cabinets came to be. Here's the link to my blog post from which the designer for the tv show…found the photos I snapped of my kitchen.

Hi! I really like the idea of placing the plates on the wall -- how would you suggest one hangs them? Thanks!
